A look at Gameloft's GTA clone, Gang$tar: West Coast Hustle

gangstarpromo.jpg

Gameloft has revealed some information on their latest sandbox effort Gang$tar: West Coast Hustle. While I would LOVE to take credit for swapping out the 's' for a dollar sign and intentionally misspelling gangster that's actually how the game is "officially" spelled. Charming! As of now very little is known about the game but if you've ever played a GTA game (more specifically San Andreas) you should know what to expect, it looks to be a miniature iPhone clone of the Rockstar classic. The game pulls no punches in terms of your role; You're a gangster doing gangster sh*t. You're free to roam about the city robbing people, going on missions, wreaking havoc on the neighborhoods, killing fools, etc.

gangstar002.jpgThe free roaming environment is rendered in full 3D which has me more than a little skeptical. It's extremely ambitious but in general I think a lot of 3D games on the platform have struggled a bit. Between graphics that are barely able to chug along and cumbersome controls I've been let down by a number of them. That's not to say it can't be done, but Gameloft surely has their work cut out for them. The 3GS however, in terms of pure horsepower, should be able to handle this beautifully. A shaky cam video of the game has been released which actually put some of my concerns at ease. It looks very promising, I just hope the game doesn't try to bite off more than it can chew. Check it out:

Now Available: DOOM Resurrection, $9.99

doomresurrectionicon.jpg Who out there likes satanic imagery, gore, metal and violence? Can I see a show of hands? Oh good! This post is for you then. Just wanted to give you a quick heads up that id Software's highly anticipated Doom Resurrection has been released!

The latest effort in the Doom franchise hit the app store not too long ago and is available for *gulp* $9.99. I know, I know. We've gotten so comfortable with the barrage of dollar deals we've had lately that 10 bucks sounds a bit high these days. I'm sure a lot of people will be a bit hesitatant to pick this one up with the comparatively high price tag but it looks as though you're gonna get what you pay for, it looks like a quality experience.

But enough about pricing! It's out and if you're a Doom fan you'll undoubtedly pick this one up. If you want to know a little more about the release Touch Arcade has an exclusive interview with John Carmack of id Software and Escalation Studios' Tom Mustaine about the game. Be sure and check out the feature list and official trailer below.

Features:

- An all-new chapter of the DOOM saga designed exclusively for the iPhone and iPod Touch
- Advanced graphics engine designed from the ground up to take full advantage of the power found in Apple's mobile devices
- Wield arsenal of heavy-hitting weapons to defeat a variety of hideous monster and bosses
- Innovative controls for fast-paced and accessible first person action
- Intense story that new players and long-time DOOM fans can enjoy

Warpack Grunts lands in the app store.

warpackgruntsicon.jpg Freeverse, the folks behind Flick Fishing and Slotz Racer, have unleashed their newest baby on the app store today, Warpack Grunts (99 cents). The game is a light hearted squad based shooter that puts you in control of several different vehicles and soldiers (tanks, helicopters, snipers, squads, etc.) The high bird's eye perspective of the battlefield keeps your characters fairly small and gives you a large view of the territory. One of the games biggest assets, I've been told, is its humor. The game it's chock full of little jokes and gags throughout.

warpackgrunts.jpg

An international squad of special forces troopers pulled from units all around the world has been put together. They shoot things, blow things up, drive tanks and pilot helicopters. They also really, really love their M-16s. They are the Grunts!

Lead the squad around 40 levels of mayhem to stop Evil Dude’s plan and save the world. Warpack: Grunts has 4 levels of difficulty (Easy, Normal, Hard and Nnnnaarrrgh!), online highscores for the campaign and every level, as well as a special unlockable game mode for those of a survivalist nature (oh and the obligatory hidden musical instrument of course).

Early iTunes reviews are rolling in and it's currently rated at 3 1/2 stars. The complaint mentioned several times is the games questionable control system. To get an idea of how the game handles check out the video below:

Anyone here give it a shot yet? What do you think?

Finger amputation on the go! Brave Man hits the app store.

bravemanicon.jpg So once I saw the first screenshot for this game and the price tag I knew I had to give it a shot. I'm a HUGE sucker for novelty games like this. Especially when said game looks like it was developed for the NES. Brave Man, released by Takaaki Ogiwara, hit the app store today for 99 cents.

It's an extraordinarily simple game, in fact, all you do is tap the screen at the appropriate time. The simplicity of the gameplay and presentation just adds to its overall charm. Also, the fun factor for a game is immediately increased once digit amputation comes into the equation.

braveman001.jpg

The game slides a knife across the screen over your characters spread out hand. The longer the game is played the faster the knife will become. When you tap the screen the knife will come slamming down and depending on your timing you will either hit the table (good) or a finger (bad). If you hit towards the middle of your finger you'll slice it off, ending the game and causing your character to shake in agony. If you slice it on its side you'll suffer a small cut, but do this too many times and the finger will eventually come off. The more sequential hits on the table you get the higher your score will be. If you're the competitive type you'll be glad to know that Brave Man features a fairly simple online leaderboard system displaying the world's top scores.

braveman003.jpgI can't picture myself playing the game too many more times after this but I don't regret the purchase. The concept along with the execution puts a smile on my face like few games have. At 99 cents it's worth checking out if it sounds up your alley, just don't expect to get too much gameplay out of it.
